Transcription: The word missile simply means something thrown and early man was quick to realize that something thrown can be an effective weapon. The first missile in that sense was probably a stick or a stone. Then the sling provided a means of throwing the stone with more force and the stick soon became an arrow shot from a bow. Larger missiles could be cast hundreds of yards by the Roman ballista, a word still preserved in our term ballistic missile and the modern weapon bearing that name can travel from continent to continent in a matter of minutes.
